π― How the 12-group format works
The 2026 World Cup introduces a new format to accommodate the expansion from 32 to 48 teams:
- 12 groups of 4 teams (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L)
- Each team plays 3 matches in the group stage
- The top 2 of each group qualify (24 teams)
- The 8 best third-placed teams also qualify (8 teams)
- Total: 32 teams qualify for the Round of 32
