The 48-Team Format of the 2026 World Cup Explained

In March 2023, the FIFA Council approved expanding from 32 to 48 teams. It's the first expansion since 1998 (24 to 32). Several reasons:
- Inclusion: allow more nations from Africa, Asia and Oceania to participate
- Broadcasting: 104 matches instead of 64 = much more TV revenue

🎯 How to qualify for the Round of 32?
With 48 teams in the group stage, FIFA had to invent a new system. Here's how 32 of the 48 teams qualify:
Rule 1 — Top 2 of each group (24 teams)
As before: the two best teams of each group automatically qualify.
12 groups × 2 teams = 24 qualified
Rule 2 — 8 best third-placed teams
Out of the 12 third-placed teams, the top 8 qualify by ranking:
- Points earned
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Drawing of lots if perfectly tied
8 additional qualifiers
Total: 32 teams qualify for the Round of 32.

From the Round of 32 onwards, the format is classic: single-elimination.
