The 48-Team Format of the 2026 World Cup Explained

For the first time since 1998, the World Cup changes format. Understand in 5 minutes how this historic tournament with 48 teams and 104 matches works.

πŸ†• Why the change?

In March 2023, the FIFA Council approved expanding from 32 to 48 teams. It's the first expansion since 1998 (24 to 32). Several reasons:

🎯 How to qualify for the Round of 32?

With 48 teams in the group stage, FIFA had to invent a new system. Here's how 32 of the 48 teams qualify:

Rule 1 β€” Top 2 of each group (24 teams)

As before: the two best teams of each group automatically qualify.

12 groups Γ— 2 teams = 24 qualified

Rule 2 β€” 8 best third-placed teams

Out of the 12 third-placed teams, the top 8 qualify by ranking:

  1. Points earned
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Drawing of lots if perfectly tied

8 additional qualifiers

Total: 32 teams qualify for the Round of 32.

πŸ† The knockout bracket

From the Round of 32 onwards, the format is classic: single-elimination.

  • πŸ“… Round of 16 (8 matches) β€” July 4 β†’ 7
  • πŸ“… Quarter-finals (4 matches) β€” July 9 β†’ 11
  • πŸ“… Semi-finals (2 matches) β€” July 14 and 15
  • πŸ“… 3rd place playoff β€” July 18
  • πŸ† Final β€” July 19, 2026 β€” MetLife Stadium

⚠️ Strategic implications (for predictions)

More surprises possible 🎲

With the 8 best third-placed teams, a team can qualify with only 3 points (1W, 2L). This makes the group stage less predictable and increases interest until the very last match.

"Smaller" nations can shine

Curaçao, Cape Verde, Jordan have a real chance. Like Morocco in 2022 (semi-finalist!), an unexpected team can go far.

More matches = more predictions = more fun

104 matches instead of 64 β€” that's 62% more matches. For predictors, more chances to score points (and beat your friends!).

Take advantage of the new format!

More matches = more opportunities to predict and score points.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why 48 teams instead of 32?

FIFA voted the expansion in 2023 to allow more nations to participate, especially from Africa and Asia, and increase tournament revenues.

What is a "best third-placed team"?

A team that finishes 3rd in its group and ranks among the top 8 best of the 12 third-placed teams (by points, then goal difference, then goals scored).

Will it ever go back to 32 teams?

Probably never. The 48-team format is now the standard. FIFA has even discussed a possible 64-team Cup in 2030 (currently rejected).

Is the Round of 32 new?

Yes! It's the first time in World Cup history. A direct consequence of expanding to 48 teams.

How many matches does the winner play?

8 matches total: 3 group + 1 R32 + 1 R16 + 1 QF + 1 SF + 1 Final. One more than in 2022.
